Last Thursday I attended a coffee morning at the Adventure centre, and I am so glad I did!
A lady from St Charles Hospital came to talk about sexual health. The topic chosen was "the cervical screening" which I thought was very appropiate, as the latest figures show a dropp on women taking their cervical screening (smear test).
The facilitator explained:
*What is cervical cancer? It happens when the cells in the cervix grown in an uncontrolled way and build up to form a lump (tumor).
*What causes cervical cancer? Is caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). In England the girls aged 13 are offered the vaccination.
*What is cervical screening? It used to be called "smear test" and involves taking a small sample of cells from the surface of the cervix.
*What are the benefits of cervical screening? It helps to prevent cervical cancer and save lives.
The NHS offers cervical screening to all women aged 25 to 49 every three years, and women aged 50 to 64 every five years.
