Dianne speaks powerfully about her hopes and fears for the future. On a personal level Dianne hopes to own her own home where the sun shines through the window. On a societal level Dianne wants to see structural inequalities dismantled. Her ultimate fear is these inequalities will not be dismantled and the next generation of young people will experience even more extreme forms of inequality. She speaks about how our current system has led to selfish decision making based on short term profit making, where the voice of young people has been marginalised.
This story was gathered by a youth advocate from the Equality Trust as part of a project called Reconstructing the Social Contract. 10 young people trained as community reporters and spoke to people aged between 16 and 25 in the United Kingdom to explore what impacts young people's life chances and their relationship with the state.

My Hope for the future is that I will
live in a world where I would not have
to fight this system of inequality
because it is exhausting I hope to be
able to share the diverse stories of
amazing humans from all over the world
without their struggle being Central to
the story because of greedy people I
hope to own a home where the sun shines
through my window I hope the price of
everything will stop arising I hope
racism and capitalism just to name a few
of the isms that stifle my life will be
dismantled My ultimate fear is that none
of this will come to pass and that the
next generation of young people will
experience what we are for even worse
some days I think nothing will change
but other days I'm empowered to be part
of the fight for change I would like
those in power to actually listen to
people especially young people I'm not
trying to be morbid but the older
generation who are making these selfish
decisions are going to die and we are
going to be left to pick up the pieces
which is not fair a change of government
would be great but I think currently
politics has become a major game the
current parties are making tick toks
while people are starving and can't Heat
their homes I wanted to say where are
the people that actually care but they
are there they are the likes of Jeremy
Corbin Diane Abbott and all the
grassroot campaigners and Charities it
is a shame they get pushed to the
side the wages in this country need to
improve drastically
they keep hyp hiking up the prices of
everything and then reducing the quality
of the item that's insane a small and
maybe humorous example is the donuts for
Morrison they used to be 50p and a
generous size now they are 90p and might
as well be mini
Donuts it just speaks to the larger
problem the greed of capitalism has
seeped into every area of Our Lives you
can't even enjoy simple treats
when I got them the other day and saw
the price hike I thought about the
people who would treat their kids when
it was 50p but now can't afford the new
price 40p is chicken change to some
people but for people living in extreme
poverty it makes a big difference
ultimately for me to have a better life
I need people who really care about
people to be in government and I want
the standard of living to be much better
humans created the system we don't have
to live like this many people think they
have failed in life because they haven't
worked hard I don't think it is about
working hard this system is like a
hamster
wheel I would like to believe that I am
very involved in making decisions about
what matters to me but then again life
is half chance I'm happy with my life
choices and who I choose to be how I
spend my free time where I went to
school the job I have right now an
example of this is that I'm currently
trying to eat healthy and move my body
this is so helpful in other parts of my
life however it's is still difficult due
to the limited time and energy so often
times decisions are made for us because
of structures consumerism is what fuels
capitalism so unhealthy food is made to
be appealing and convenient and the
prices of gyms are outrageous why do we
have to pay extortionate amounts of
money to be
healthy anyways I'm currently doing an
internship which I am enjoying this is
my locked in year meaning I want to
dedicate this time and effort into what
I love doing building new skills and
discovering new things applying for this
community reporting project is part of
that journey I know I love asking
questions and hearing people's story so
I feel privileged to be a part of this
project that can impact change it is
nice to know that my voice and the voice
of other young people are being listened
to
