Boat trip around the Islands Chester Zoo

One of my favorite days out is at Chester Zoo, it's changed a lot over the decades, I remember going in the 1970's on a school trip and seeing the hippos (complete with an unforgettable and disgusting smell even for a small boy!).  Then later my nephews went in the mid 1990's, with the elephant house being a big attraction for them - although they still remember the smell!  Must be genetic!  You can find a history in pictures of the zoo online (Me You and the Zoo 1930's to present day) at  -  chesterzoo.org/memories/zoo.

Chester Zoo is now apparently the UK's most loved zoo, partly I'm sure because of recent TV shows such as Our Zoo on BBC1 and more recently on Channel 4's 'The Secret life of the Zoo'.  A place of education, conservation and research and of course a major attraction for a fantastic day out with  amazing animals set in 125 acres of award-winning enclosures and gardens. Chester has more than 500 different species at the zoo, including some of the most endangered animals in the world and in 2015 there was quite a baby boom, including Nandita Hiway the elephant calf, a trio of tiger cubs two boys and a girl, named Topan, Jaya and Kasarna, and a tiny Sumatran orangutan Siska and many more.

The zoo is open daily from 10am with free and disabled parking available. There is flexible pricing which allows you to choose the day and price that suits you best, off peak is obviously cheaper and August is most expensive, various offers pop up from time to time further information can be found online at - chesterzoo.org.  Whilst it can be pricey taking the family, there are plenty of picnic areas, including an indoor area for bad weather days so costs can be kept down by bringing your own food and drink, and there is plenty for the kids to do with play areas to run off steam in between viewing the animals, lots of interactive activities and animal talks.  The newly opened Islands included in the ticket price also has a boat ride around the island exhibits.

Well worth a visit at any time of the year.
