Shopkeepers  are concerned that the lack of parking in Stanley town centre is losing their trade.

Brian Ridley’s discount furniture store has suffered with people parking directly in front of his shop making his loading and unloading impossible. He told us, “I have lost trade, people are unable to park outside my shop, so they go elsewhere.” He also said “parking is terrible and lack of parking is an nuisance”.

Estate Agent Aiden Kelly based in Stanley, said that parking is difficult. The proposed one way system would have eased the problem, but it was rejected. “ I would like to see parking bays put in place –but not just for disabled as they are abused.” He added that the restrictions on yellow lines are strictly enforced.

A BT engineer who is working near by, said he had no problem concerning with parking in the area. If they need to be in a no parking zone they can contact the council and are allowed to park.

The staff in the Red Cross charity shop also agreed that parking was difficult for donators and shoppers alike. They often have to warn customers that they could receive fines for parking outside the shop.
