Mohammad Din was born on October 9, 1936 in Jalandhar, India later moving to Faisalabad, Pakistan in 1947 where he began his wrestling career. Mohammad was Pakistan Champion from 1957 to 1960 and was a member of the Pakistan Team that competed in EGYPT, SWEDEN and the ROME OLYMPICS of 1960.

Still passionate and proud of his involvement, we asked him for his thoughts on the Olympics coming to Great Britain.

 

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH WRESTLING?

“From childhood, my older brother was a professional wrestler and he got me started, then it became my dream to fight for Pakistan”.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING AN OLYMPIAN?

“It was a great Honour. Our team of 7 wrestlers in 1960 was very strong”.

RECORDS SHOW YOU MADE IT TO THE 4THROUND. WHAT WERE YOUR MEDAL HOPES?

“At that time, I was the reigning Pakistan champion and so a great hope for the Gold Medal. However, during my match with an Iranian wrestler, my thumb was broken. I lost 2 – 1 and couldn’t progress any further”.

ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THE OLYMPICS?

“Really excited for London”.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE OLYMPICS COMING TO GREAT BRITAIN?

”I think it is a great Honour for Great Britain and England”

WHICH NATION WILL YOU BE SUPPORTING?

”Pakistan is my country but I am British also, so I support Pakistan and Great Britain”.

WHO WILL YOUR CUSTOMERS BE SUPPORTING?

”Like me, first Pakistan and then Great Britain”.

SOME OF YOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN IN HERE, SO WILL THEY BE SUPPORTING GREAT BRITAIN?

“Yes team GB all the way”.

WILL YOU OR YOUR FAMILY BE ATTENDING ANY OF THE EVENTS?

“My sons will be attending the football at Old Trafford”.

 

Now approaching 76yrs of age Mohammad, with his three sons, oversees the running of the (recently refurbished) family business, NAFEES SWEET CENTRE at 616 Stockport Road, Longsight. Where it has been for over 40 years.
