Election numbers

I wake up this morning to a new day. New day in my life, new day in my life in Kensington. We won! Emma Dent Coad won the elections last night after a third recount!

And I was there.

I was there as the new counters were going in and the supporters gathered outside the Town Hall.

I was given a Press badge upon producing my Community Reporters ID card, I was ushered to the upstairs room for the press only.

I could see the three large tables covered with blue tablecloth. I could see the process of counting, rows of people counting, rows of people overseeing the counting.

Some people passing the bundled votes to the counters. The process doesn't seem waterproof to me.

I am anxious. Third recount, whispers are that Emma won but they won’t have it. Other rumor has it that a bundle of 50 in favor of Lady Borwick was found.

We sit there, counters counting. Two hours later they are finished. Suspense. Counting the bundles now. The Returning officer (I am told that is his name), who looks like an undertaker to me asks the candidates to meet him in the corner of the room. Just the candidates. We study their body language.

After this they are called to the podium and the Mayor starts to announce the results. She says Victoria Borwick – 16313 and follows by saying Emma Dent Coad – 16333.

I don’t quite clock it I am so nervous, but I see and hear a roar and cheering in the room and I don’t think that it could be one for the Conservatives. My Press colleague reporter runs downstairs to tell the supporters, who are dancing, drumming and singing.

Our community is jubilant!

Emma Dent Coad wins by 20 votes!!!

I now live in Labour Borough.

This is the beginning of a new era for us and our children.
