Liverpool has a rich history of characters that has graced its streets, and many of them and their stories have remained untold – until now. ‘The Good, The Bad and The Scouse’ will unearth some of Liverpool’s unsung heroes and undisclosed villains from the past and bring their stories to life. The project will focus on exploring the stories of people who have lived, worked and played in Toxteth between 1850 and 1900 and it will use these stories to shed light on the social, cultural and political climate of the time. With over £42,000 of grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Splendid Things will be working with a range of people from the local community (and beyond!) to discover some of Toxteth’s hidden heritage and bring it to life for new audiences in creative and interactive ways.

As part of the project Splendid Things will be working with a local Archive Researcher and team of volunteers to delve into newspaper archives to uncover quirky stories from Toxteth’s past. Eight of these stories will be selected by the community to be transformed into a series of animations being produced by the talented Robot Foundry VFX based on scripts and storyboards developed by different community groups. The stories will form the basis of a physical and digital heritage trail around Toxteth and an educational resource pack that can be used to deliver heritage workshops in a range of settings.

The Good, The Bad and The Scouse will see Splendid Things working with a variety of organisations (including local schools and community projects) and individuals to develop people’s skills and knowledge of Toxteth’s heritage and ensure that our heritage is curated and preserved for future generations. It will provide a range of exciting opportunities for people to get involved including researching sessions, scriptwriting workshops and heritage trail activities and build on Splendid Things previous work. It will enable the charity to continue to develop strong ties with groups and individuals and offer positive opportunities for people from a diverse range of backgrounds to come together to create, share and learn. Hayley Trowbridge, the Project Worker on The Good, The Bad and The Scouse said: “This will be a fab project for our community and we’re made up that the Heritage Lottery Fund has offered us the support to make the project happen. We want as many people as possible to be involved – so if you’ve got an interest in local heritage, scriptwriting, creative technology or just want to be involved, then get in touch”.

Explaining the importance of the HLF support, Sara Hilton, the head of the HLF in the North West, said: “We are delighted to support this project as these people’s lives are inextricably woven into Liverpool’s rich history. This project will not only capture those vital stories, but in doing so will give different sections of the Toxteth community the opportunity to meet, forge new friendships and learn new skills. Together they can celebrate, and take pride in, their past and their local identity.”
