As a local community Cancer & Autism Activist Suzanne Fernando is absolutely delighted and honoured to have been shortlisted for the regional shortlist stage of the Britain has Spirit campaign. The category Cervical Cancer survivor Suzanne was nominated in by her husband Kester is the Regional Community Hero of the Year and Suzanne is absolutely blown away by the decision of the judges whom have selected her as the Scotland/Borders regional finalist.

Suzanne says “I really can’t believe it and it hasn’t quite sunk in yet and I keep pinching myself to make sure it’s real!”

If Suzanne won the campaign she would split equally the £25,000 to put towards a good local cause equally with:

1. The National Autistic Society Scotland for their NAS One Stop Shop – Ayrshire. Suzanne’s eldest daughter Jordan is autistic and is now an Ambassador and young campaigner for autism. The 8 Scottish One Stop Shops provide the following services to their communities:

– answer general questions about Autism and Asperger syndrome – for example, they can talk through what the condition is, how it might affect someone, and suggest strategies to help

– talk through options available to people with Autism and Asperger syndrome

– talk through support options available to family members.

– tell you about local services both within the National Autistic Society and others.

– refer you on to other organisations that may be able to help you.

– support you at appointments where they are able to.

– send you information in the post or by email about all of these things.

2. North Ayrshire Cancer Care (http://www.northayrshirecancercare.org/) who provide palliative care for patients suffering from cancer and it’s treatments, who require transport, therapy, care and support in the North Ayrshire & Arran community.  This charity was my lifeline as Suzanne went through Cervical Cancer treatments whilst her husband stayed at home and cared for our very young autistic daughter and newborn baby girl Aaron. It was a devastating time for their whole family but North Ayrshire Cancer Care made the whole process much more bearable for us, Suzanne really doesn’t know how she would have coped without them.

3. Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society

A group of local people working to preserve and develop the castle site in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland in conjunction with the local authority and other organisations and local businesses.http://www.ardrossancastle.scot/

Winning this amount of money would be Suzanne’s way of giving back not only to our community but to a charity very close to our hearts.

This would be a huge boost for our community charities so can I please ask you all to show your support by voting everyday and sharing.
