Night deepens, the stars in full display,
Street lights feeble, as if blinded by the dark.
You walk home, a carefree swagger
Evident for all to witness.
New York skyline, awash with lights and energy,
Yet on this street, there is not a soul to be found.
Ample opportunity for this perpetrator to get his prey,
Forever leaving questions unanswered.
Alert yet dreamy, memories of a fun night
Fresh in your eyes. Native attire
Envelopes around you in a comforting embrace.
Your smile widens as you approach your destination.
A car approaches, its speed quickens as it gets closer.
It puzzles you at first, then you realise.
It's coming straight for you.
No time to dive out of its way.
The impact is almost instantaneous.
Falling hard, your head smashes against the tarmac.
Blood spilling out, road splattered, quickly turning red.
Panic-stricken driver speeds away, wishing he could forget.
You do not scream, speak or even move,
An eerie silence falls.
Your last breath is taken,
Existence forever confined to the annals of history.
Nobody knows what your last thought was,
Whether you were in pain or not,
Or even if you'd made sense of this situation.
We will never know for sure now.
