Lower Kersal Allotments
On Thursday 18 August a party of seven from Salford Together Inspiring Communities met at Lower Kersal allotments. We were shown around
by Tommy Lever MBE from Lower Kersal Young Peoples group. The allotments are very well kept and have much to offer as we found out whilst
taking a tour round. There is a hut where the young can practice making arts and crafts like making cards for birthdays and other occasions. The
propriators of the allotments never throw anything of use away that can be used, for instance there were a load of old boots and shoes used to grow
plants and flowers in them and even an old bus shelter they have turned into a shed come greenhouse.
The disabled people have not been forgotten with a greenhouse adapted so you can attend your plants from your wheelchair, the bedding areas
being about three feet off the ground.
Only to soon it was time to say goodbye and head for lunch at nearby St Aidans church which was served by Leslie, Tommys wife who made a
wonderful soup from potatoes and leeks from the allotment.
The reason for the visit was to gather ideas for turning some redundant flower beds and land adjoining Kersal sports village into something productive
I will let you know how we progress.
Colin
