The nice sunny morning of Monday 19th August marked a fun packed first day of 4 at our ‘Erith Park Community fun week’, lead by Gemma McGill, Chris Carey, Maddassar Arif, myself (Tracey Kember), Steve Homer, and Trent Strickland. As usual lunch was supplied by Rosemary White and Rita Hanfrey.

The activities were marked for the ages of 4 years upwards and to begin with we only started with 4 children but by the end of the first day it had grown to 20.

Everyone enjoyed themselves including the adults, and it was good to see residents and Orbit workers working together to bring light to this great community project.

In the mornings we did arts and crafts at which I learned new skills. The children made pom pom animals, friendship bands, magnets, badges, jigsaws and puppets, which I managed to stitch myself to, and some even learnt to knit. The children also made a mock up in blue peter style of the new Erith Park.

In the afternoons the children were taught about photography, made pictograms and saw the camera obscura in action. We ended the day in a games session playing either cricket or rounders and various other outdoor activities.

The highlight of the week was a trip to the Wates compound run by Dee and Lynne Mitchell. From a viewing platform the children saw the diggers in action and also got to learn about safety on building sites and designed their own t shirts.

By the end of the week we had in total 25 children so word had got round about our fabulous fun filled week!

To end it all we played bingo and various party games and Gemma McGill led us on a treasure hunt outside. On going back the children did the conga all the way back to the community centre which the residents enjoyed.

The Event workers evaluated at the end if we could have done things better. We decided we will do the event again and some of Erith Park core group members popped in to see how the event was going, which the children loved.
