Salford Royal hospital young renal mentors are on a mission to become community reporters and in association with Inspiring Communities Together are learning the art of telling stories through film, radio and print. The young renal mentors are all young individuals that are dealing with some form of Kidney failure and have decided to put their experiences, time and effort into helping other younger people that struggle to deal with the reality of Kidney failure. The five week workshop will culminate in a feature film to promote the Salford Royal Young Renal Mentorship program and also encourage our younger out patients to attend their clinical appointments, all of which will be created by the young renal mentors.

Salford Royal hospital like many other NHS trusts around the country have a real problem with missed appointments especially among the younger outpatients. Kidney outpatients require constant management and monitoring which if missed normally ends up with these patients presenting at Accident and Emergency all of which places an additional strain on the NHS resources.

The first session has been very beneficial as we have learnt some of the main aspects required to tell a story and deliver our points of view in a non judgmental or condescending way and their is a real sense of camaraderie among the team. We are all looking forward to producing an epic, heartfelt film and learning more about the world of film and story telling.
