‘Up-cycling’ is the buzzword on everyone’s lips. Up-cycling goes one step further than simply recycling or reusing, and involves using things that you would otherwise throw away in order to make something new. Common up-cycling projects include restoring battered and worn furniture to make it more useful and attractive, and crafting spent household items into jewellery.

It is possible to imagine the works in Rosie Scott-Massie’s current exhibition at Masham Gallery, Paperworks, as advanced examples of up-cycling. As the name of the exhibition would suggest, the art in this exhibition is primarily made from paper. Think old-fashioned maps and pages from children’s books, crafted into concertinas, gloves, and even stilettos. The items in the exhibition tread a fine line between functional and whimsical, and include an intricate sculpture of a country landscape.

As well as Scott-Massie’s own work, the exhibition includes art by Kate Slater, Helen Musselwhite, Clare Lindley, Sarah Morpeth, Elizabeth Shorrock, Yasemin Wigglesworth, and Jennifer Collier. Many of the unique pieces are for sale at reasonable prices.

The exhibition is running until the 28th June. For more information go to Masham Gallery's website
