Now this is a story…

All about how…

My life got flipped-turned upside down...

And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there…

I’ll tell you how I became involved in Students’ Unions.

I was just really involved and always wanted to throw myself into things.

So after being an NUS Delegate at my previous Students’ Union and being on our Union Council, I stood to be Vice President Education.

This involved representing students’ views on an academic basis, from their concerns about the quality of the assessment and feedback to the extra course costs that students had to fork out for on top of their course.

This gave me the confidence and knowledge to stand for SU President – and so I did.

It was a horrible week of campaigning, I say horrible in the nicest possible way. It was just gruelling with long days! But I loved the fancy dress, the lecture shout-outs, talking to hundreds of students along the way.

When it came to results night, it was just an evening of torturous anticipation.

When I saw the other candidate get 1120 votes, I thought I had lost, every other candidate won with 800.

But when I saw the voting bar go up for me, getting closer and closer to the other candidate’s tally, it felt like I was on a roller coaster.

To see my tally hit 1167 I can’t describe the relief… probably from the rush of blood to the head from my friends from home who came up for it lifted me up as if they’d won the F.A Cup, it all just went straight to my head.

It was a wonderful year and it’s put me in great stead now in my new role, at a different Union.

I’m now Societies Coordinator at MMU and absolutely love it! I love talking to the students and helping them, I feel I’ve started to form relationships with them and know them a little more personally, which I think is really important in working in a Students’ Union.

I love this chapter in my Students’ Union story, and can’t wait to see how this story ends.
