There's more than just people in our communities of East Salford. Harry of Kersal Vale Allotments tells us how he's been working with bees ...

If you've been in Kersal Vale Allotments, you may have noticed a buzzing noise coming from the back of the site. That's because we have a colony of bees there. And they're growing!

3 week's ago we had 6 colonies (hives) and now we have 9 colonies. The honey bees for some reason have swarmed on many occasions, we think it could have something to do with the mild winter we have experienced.

This means a lot more have survived the winter which means lots of baby bees. When they breed, they make hives in trees, which means I have to get on my ladder and get them down. It's not much fun being up the top of a ladder with a swarm of honey bees. But the great thing is, it means we're collecting lots of honey!

The honey we get is put into jars and we give it to anyone who comes to the allotment. Donations are welcome and all proceed go towards the upkeep of the allotments.
