What is tagging?

Tagging describes the process of adding words to a piece of content. These words describe anything that is seen or heard in the piece and helps people to find content more easily.

Why is it important?

Tagging allows more content to be more searchable – and that means more if it can be found more easily. As a community of members, we can all play a part in tagging each other’s content with descriptive words so that, over time, the resource of material on this site will become really easy to search and enjoy.

How do I do it?

You will need to be logged in to tag content. This means that your own personal ‘tag cloud’ will start to appear on your own profile page. When you are viewing content – whether it’s a story, video, photo or audio clip – think about what you’re looking at and then add any words that relate. For example, a piece on Community Gardening might suggest tags like; hobby, plants, wildlife, healthy, outdoors. Of a photograph of birds might suggest tags like: wildlife, water, swans, day out, happiness.

IMPORTANT: if you add more than one word, then words MUST be separated by a comma. If you don’t, then the computer will read all of the words as one unique tag rather than lots of different words.

You can choose any word that you think relates to that piece of content and add as many as you like.

What happens if I make a mistake?

Don’t worry if you spell something wrong or make a mistake – you can simply delete the tag afterwards by hovering over the word and clicking on the red cross.

How can I find content to tag?

Use the Explore page to search for topics that you are interested in. Or maybe you just want to look at content produced by people in your local area – you can use the Explore section to search for this content too. Or maybe you want to start by tagging all of the content that you’ve produced yourself, to help others find your work more easily. You can find all of your content easily by going to your Profile page.

Do I need to know anything about the topic?

No, not at all. You might not know anything about Gardening or Motorbikes, but just simply say what you see, or describe how the piece makes you feel.

I haven’t got a log-in – can I tag content?

Yes, you can still help us refine the content by adding tags, even if you don’t have a log in.

What is rated content?

When you are logged in and viewing a piece on content, on the right hand column you will see a heading that says ‘Rated By You’. If you like the content you are watching, then click on the button and it will be promoted to the front page for others to enjoy.
